چکیده

Recently, water diuresis has been shown to promote chronic Escherichia coli bacteriuria following the injection of bacteria into the bladder lumen of rats with normal urinary systems(l). However, maintenance of bacteriuria for periods up to 56 days has not resulted in renal lesions(l,2). Similar effects of water diuresis on bacteriuria have been observed in mice. In this species, however, severe pyelonephritis is a common and prominent finding in animals with bacteriuria of 3 weeks duration(3). Water diuresis, therefore, seemed to increase the susceptibility of the mouse kidney to pyelonephritis. It was remarkable, however, that pyelonephritis did not occur in the rat despite prolonged exposure of the renal papilla to large numbers of bacteria growing in the urine. Since Andriole has demonstrated the protective effect of water diuresis on certain models of pyelonephritis in the rat(4-6) it seemed that one explanation for the difference in the effect of chronic bacteriuria in the mouse and rat was perhaps a difference in the effect of water diuresis on pyelonephritis in the two species. Using the model of direct inoculation of bacteria into the renal papilla to produce pyeloneplhritis Keane was unable to show a protective effect of water diuresis in the mouse(7). The purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of water diuresis on the same model infection (direct papillary inoculation) of E. coli in rats. If rats were protected, it would be possible to explain the dif-

Effects of Betamethasone and Gentamicin on Renal Scarring Induced by Mannose-Sensitive E Coli Pyelonephritis in Rat

Background: Pyelonephritis can lead to renal scar. Objective: To evaluate the effects of betamethasone in preventing renal scarring in rat model of pyelonephritis. Methods: Sixty three female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into seven groups. Group A was the control. Mannose-sensitive E coli was directly inoculated into the left kidney exposed under general anesthesia in groups C–G. Group B re...

Experimental pyelonephritis. XVI. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus infections in mice and the effect of "water diuresis".

Water diuresis has different effects on the outcome of urinary infections in rodents depending on the test organism, the route of inoculation, and the species of animal used. In rats, the production of pyelonephritis following hematogenous inoculation of Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans or Streptococcus fecaelis was prevented or cured by water diuresis."' The possible mechanisms by which...

Site of action of nitrofurantoin in experimental urinary tract infection.

The effectiveness of nitrofurantoin in suppressing bacterial growth in the urinary tract was evaluated by using two different experimental models. Pyelonephritis was produced in rats by direct inoculation of 10(4)Escherichia coli in the medulla of left kidney. Ascending urinary tract infection was induced by inoculation into the urinary bladder of 10(7)Proteus mirabilis, after a partial cystect...

اثر درمانی رزوراترول بر عملکرد کلیوی رت های مبتلا به پیلونفریت حاد

Introduction: Urinary tract infections are common causes of outpatient referrals to medical centers. Acute pyelonephritis is often treated by injectable antibiotics. Side effects, especially resistance to antibiotics, considered the use of non-antibiotic compounds. Resveratrol, which is found in grapes, is a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial as well. In this study, the ...

Experimental pyelonephritis. XIV. Pyelonephritis in normal mice produced by inoculation of E. coli into the bladder lumen during water diuresis.

Bladder urine is normally sterile, and when as many as 10,000,000 bacteria are placed within the bladder lumen of normal men or animals the bacteria are cleared promptly.1" Recently, it has been demonstrated that when normal rats are undergoing water diuresis, as few as 10 E. coli may multiply rapidly and persist in the urinary tract for prolonged periods of time.' Despite the persistance of ba...
